About Jörg M. Colberg
I was born and grew up in Germany - hence the funny umlaut in my first name (which, btw, in the absence of
umlauts can also be spelled Joerg). After attending university and receiving a doctorate/Ph.D. in
astrophysics I moved to the US, where I now work and live with my wife Karen and our three incredibly
spoiled cats.
In the late 1990s, I created what has since become the standard visualization technique for supercomputer simulations of cosmic structure formation. My
images have been reproduced many times in magazines (such as Scientific American) and books (see, for example,
the cover of this widely used textbook).
I got interested in photography, or rather in contemporary fine-art photography, on the last day of 1999 when
I picked up a camera and started to take photos. I have since worked on my own photography, and since
mid-2002, I have been compiling Conscientious,
one of the first and now one of the most popular weblogs about contemporary fine-art photography. In 2006,
American Photo named me one of their
Photography Innovators.
Interviews from the blog have appeared in Yvi and
Orion magazines, and I am a contributor to
American Photo's website. I have
also started to curate photography exhibitions, with the first show (A New
American Portrait) having Jen Bekman as
co-curator. In addition, I was a member of the review panels of Hey, Hot Shot! and Critical
Mass, a jury member of the 2008 International Hyeres Festival for Fashion and Photography, and I will
be reviewing work at Atlanta Celebrates Photography
and PhotoNOLA later in 2008.
