About Jörg M. Colberg
I was born and grew up in Germany - hence the funny umlaut in my first name (which, btw, in the absence of
umlauts can also be spelled Joerg). After attending university and receiving a doctorate/Ph.D. in
astrophysics I moved to the US, where I now work and live, together with my wife Karen and our three increadibly
spoiled cats. With no actual photography/art background, I only got interested in photography, or rather in
contemporary fine-art photography, on the last day of 1999. I have since worked on my own photography - the
best of which can be found on my website, and since
mid-2002, I have been compiling "Conscientious", a weblog about contemporary fine-art photography.
Interviews from the blog have appeared in Yvi and
Orion magazines, and I am a contributor to
American Photo's website. I have
also started to curate photography exhibitions, with the first show (A New
American Portrait) having Jen Bekman as
co-curator.
About Conscientious
Conscientious is a blog that predominantly deals with
contemporary fine-art photography (even though I also link to other topics that I might find interesting).
It presents a selection of photographers, with the selection based on whether I like their work or find it
interesting. It's really as simple as that. In addition to showcasing photographers I also link to articles
about photography, and I post reviews of photography books and interviews with photographers, with the
reviews and interviews written/conducted by me. Since I love photo books, if you want to send me a copy
of your book - for a review - please get in touch with me.
At the time of this writing (25 Sept. 2007), the list of interviews on the blog contains the following
photographers (in alphabetical order): Timothy Archibald, Roger Ballen, Juliana Beasley, Peter Bialobrzeski, Jeff Brouws, Luc Delahaye, Todd Deutsch, Mitch Epstein, Amy Elkins, Bruce Haley, Todd Hido, Chris Jordan, Misty Keasler, David Maisel, Sarah Martin, Andrew Miksys, Andrew Moore, Jay Parkinson, Martin Parr, Richard Renaldi, Roger Richards, Simon Roberts, Paul Shambroom, Stephen Shore, Alec Soth (another one about blogs), Bill Sullivan, Brian Ulrich, Shen Wei, Michael Wolf.
I sometimes get email with questions about a "submission process". There is none. If you want to send me the
link to your work, please do so (email to jmcolberg at gmail.com)! It's really as simple as that. Also, if you
want to send me other links or suggestions, I'm always very grateful for input! And you will get an answer from
me, even though that - at times - might take a few days (when I'm busy). But please keep in mind that
if I don't link to what you send me that's just because of my personal preferences (and nothing else).
