Christophe Argou

Christophe Argou spent a lot of time in New York subways, taking photos of people. I'm not sure what to think of those. They're interesting to look at. His site also has some 9/11 photos but I'm sure you've seen them all already anyway - if not Argou's then somebody else's.

Emil Schildt

While browsing through the all-time top photos at photo.net I came across Danish photographer Emil Schildt. He got plenty of very nice and interesting photos on his website many of which are nudes. He uses lots of techniques you don't see too often elsewhere so make sure you look at everything.

November 15, 2002

Philippe Pache

Philippe Pache's Nude Photography is quite different from what you usually see. Many photos are slightly out-of-focus or blurry which adds a nice dimension to them.

March 26, 2003

Bruno Espadana

Interesting Photographic Work. I especially like the b/w portrait work.

April 22, 2003

Tina McClelland

Tina McClelland has some very nice photography on her website and she is also featured on a site dedicated to self portraits (link). I guess there's a lot one could say about women who take (what some people call "explicit" - vulgo: naked) self portraits. A while back, Natasha Merritt had her fifteen minutes of fame with her (very "explicit") naked self portraits. Tina's work is on a different level, of course. If born as a man and not as an attractive woman she might have done the same work. But would it have generated the same reaction? In any case, some of her self portraits are very beautifully done and it's certainly worth it to check them out.

Alexander Kitaev's work is featured on Russian website photographer.ru. (thru the cassandra pages which offers a wonderful mix of photography and culture)

Boris Missirkov and Georgi Bogdanov

Nice gallery of works by Bulgarian duo Boris Missirkov and Georgi Bogdanov (that's not them above!). In Bulgaria, they have their own TV programme.

June 11, 2003

Contemporary Czech Photography

There's a large collection of contemporary Czech photographers on the Prague House of Photography's website. I don't really want to single out any of them - just go and browse yourself!

Bettina Rheims

I don't know what to make of French photographer Bettina Rheims. Her photographic skills are quite amazing but, unfortunately, quite often she goes for what people might attribute to questionable taste or, at least, to an over-use of cliches.

Malcolm Pasley

Very nice and classy b/w nudes by British photographer Malcolm Pasley.

June 16, 2003

Olivier Christinat

Swiss photographer Olivier Christinat has a very unique and deadpan style. It's quite amazing. I had a bit of a hard time to find nice photo collections. This site has lots of excellent b/w photos. There's a short bio plus three photos (incl. one of those deadpan nude colour photos) on this page, an interview (in French) here, a French bio here, lots of colour photos here (you need to select him from the list).

Update (21 June 2003): There's a wonderful self-portrait here.

Patrick Chatelier

You will have to bring some time to look at Patrick Chatelier's travel photography. There are tons of panoramas and you want to make sure to see his New York City. New York City is so overphotographed and cliched but Patrick Chatelier manages to get something out of it.

Raffaele Ciriello

Photojournalist Raffaele Ciriello has photos from many of the world's latest hot spots.

George Kavanagh

I like George Kavanagh's landscapes.

July 23, 2003

Frans Lemmens

Travel photography always makes me envious. Oh well. Dutch photographer Frans Lemmens went to lots of places but also looked for beauty at home (see photo above).

Roderick Packe

Roderick Packe "superimposes sequences of long tracking shots onto a single 35mm frame." Four photos at Julienne Webster Publicity.

July 24, 2003

Michal Macku

Czech photographer Michal Macku uses a technique he calls "Gellage" to create his photos.

Morten Nilsson

Morten Nilsson's portraits are very well done (and they're so amusing!). Also don't miss his landscapes.

July 25, 2003

Philippe Pache

Philippe Pache's photography - especially the one in the portfolio section - appeals to me because of its interplay between soft focus effects and a very effective use of light. Very elegant, very stylish and a nice deviation from the glossy in-your-face sex which is so ubiquitous.

Christian Coigny

For this single portrait of a child alone, Christian Coigny deserves to be linked to. Make sure you look through all the different sections - incl. the "Commercial Vitra" one. The gorgeous "Women" and "Men" sections reminded me of the work of Horst P. Horst.

July 27, 2003

Gaël Fontana

Gaël Fontana superimposes digital photos to achieve some pretty cool results. His portraits are really quite nice.
(thru dublog)

July 28, 2003

Jan Saudek

The grandmaster of absurdly bad taste, Jan Saudek, has his own website. Recommend. Not work safe. Actually, not even in such categories as "work safe".

July 30, 2003

Ami Barwell

If you like music/concert photography check out Ami Barwell's site. The website's lo-fi look is quite a nice diversion from the usual Flash-y slickness.

Luca Pagliari

"Je ne suis pas un photographe. Je suis un homme qui cherche. Le but de cette recherche n?est pas constitué par un hypoth騁ique point d?arrivée: le sens est renfermé dans la recherche même et se développe pendant le chemin du même pas avec les nombreuses et remarquables expériences du parcours." Luca Pagliari's photography is simply stunning.

Aleksey Kozlov and Marina Khlebnikova

Aleksey Kozlov and Marina Khlebnikova combine photography with painting to get some fairly interesting results.

August 9, 2003

David J Osborn

David J Osborn's British Panoramics shows Britain from its loveliest side. It's actually quite tricky to get a good panoramic photo composed. David J Osborn has done an amazing job which makes my skin turn green with envy (as is the case so often when I look at what other people are doing).

August 12, 2003

Alain Duplantier

Mark Tucker pointed out Alain Duplantier's work to me (Thanks, Mark!). It's really quite nice - Go and check it out!

August 17, 2003

Pavel Banka

If you've been here before you know that my completely subjective selection of photographers always includes creators of somber semi-abstract b/w photos. Pavel Banka is an obvious example. I have to admit, though, that even for me that's maybe a tad too somber.

August 20, 2003

Mark Power

British photographer Mark Power likes to take photos on rainy days as he explains in an interview.

August 21, 2003

Clare Smith

More minimalist abstract photography, this time by British photographer Clare Smith.

Simon Larbalestier

Simon Larbalestier's b/w photography is quite interesting. In his early works you'll find some images which you might have seen in your record collection. (thru speckled paint)

Nicolas Cuissard

French photographer Nicolas Cuissard has a large portfolio with plenty of stark b/w photos. Check out the abstract ones!

Yvan Galvez

Yvan Galvez's series "non nettes" and "a comme" caught my eye. He has some more conventional nudes, too, which are, you know, nudes (see my theme from the other day).

David and Martin Callanan

Martin Callanan from Gosh Photographic ("gosh" was basically when I said when I saw that site!) pointed out David Callanan's photos from Russia. And while you're at it check out Martin's work, too.

August 28, 2003

Thierry Urbain

Have a look at Thierry Urbain's fascinating Desert Archeologies.

September 10, 2003

Lucien Clergue

Lucien Clergue has done a lot of photography. His recent colour montages I personally find most interesting.

September 12, 2003

Didier Massard

Didier Massard's landscapes are gorgeous. Too bad they're all not real. A few more.

September 15, 2003

Renze Dijkema

Renze Dijkema's still lifes consist of found objects photographed in an unusual way.

September 18, 2003

Guido Mocafico

Guido Mocafico's style truly amazes me. The above is an example from his landscapes. His other work is equally excellent. You really have to spend some time on his site as most of the images don't work too well as thumbnails (isn't that true for almost all photography?). His page is also loading somewhat sluggishly. For the impatient this page has a few of his dark landscapes.

September 29, 2003

Serge Picard

Serge Picard's "Aux bords du monde" "explores boundaries - between land and water, water and sky, day and night".

September 30, 2003

Edith Roux

"For several years now Edith Roux (France) has been photographing the increasing uniformity of the periphery of large cities in the European Union. Everywhere the same business estates, similar office complexes and uniform shopping malls are rising, invariably bordered by the same undeveloped terrain. In order to emphasize the uniformity of her subjects, Roux always selects the same camera angle and with the aid of a computer she colours all the skies in her photographs an identical blue." (more examples of "Euroland" here; samples of another series called "Underscape" here)

October 2, 2003

Michael Staggemeier

Danish photographer Michael Staggemeier shows us examples of how to take photos that don't have much in them. Minimalism in colour and b/w.

Astrid Vredegoor

"The starting point of the series Pantone 721 is teenager's dissatisfaction with their appearance. [Astrid] Vredegoor asked the teenagers which part of their face they would like to change. She then fulfilled their wished by means of a computer face-lift."

October 4, 2003

David Williams

David Williams' "Stillness and Occurrence" is a collection of long exposures: "I am not usually lost for words when it comes to defining my work, but I find this project difficult to talk about. I take this to be a good sign since my intention was to produce a body of work which speaks for itself on issues which, by their very nature, defy rational analysis." - David Williams

October 18, 2003

Jaro Sykora

What happens when you - hypothetically speaking - cross Nadav Kander with Joel Peter Witkin? Well, look at Jaro Sykora's photos. Note that if you click on A Top Model you won't get the kind of top model you'd expect.

I'm not sure what to make of Nicole Tran Ba Vang's digital manipulations. You be the judge. (thru gmtPlus9)

October 28, 2003

Julian Thomas

Julian Thomas was careless enough to send me email which made me check out his work. I really like his Holga stuff.

November 7, 2003

2lazy4

2lazy4, Parisians Camille and François, are maybe trying a little bit too hard to be hip but, nevertheless, their site is very nice. They got some very cool "toy camera" photography in their galleries. I wish in their Sunburst series they had taken care of the light leaks. It's almost as if people think you need a certain kind of toy-camera credibility so you don't fix those light leaks and if you do you're not cool. I think it's this sort of attitude that makes me not identify myself as a toy-camera photographer even though in fact I am using lots of "toy" cameras.

November 11, 2003

Peter Gasser

Peter Gasser has plenty of b/w photos from many different places in his portfolio.

November 15, 2003

Giacomo Costa

I think I'm somewhat too dumb to understand the navigation on Giacomo Costa's website and it certainly doesn't help it's all - or at least a lot - in Italian. However, once you've made it to the photos you're up for a visual treat. His digital creations of megacities are quite interesting. Before you lose all patience with his site you can have a look at some samples here.

Update (18 Nov 03): GIacomo has modified his site and added some English text which makes it easier to look through the site.

November 16, 2003

Jaroslav Poncar

Jaroslav Poncar's photography - a lot of which is panoramic - takes you to places all over the world.

Allan Jenkins produces his photos using an old process called cyanotypes, and then toning his images [with tea!]. Read more about "ancient" photographic processes in this excellent overview.

Koos Breukel

This morning, my wife and I were talking about New Yorker magazine (NYM) that has a portrait shot by Richard Avedon in almost each issue. Even though I am a fan of Avedon's work his latest NYM portraits have consistently disappointed me. I told my wife NYM should really be a bit more imaginative - doesn't this all tie in with a glaring lack of general imagination that is becoming more and more obvious? - and hire other portrait photographers, especially emerging talents. And then I stumbled upon Koos Breukel's work - photos that are on par with Avedon's.

December 1, 2003

Ulf Lundin

Ulf Lundin is doing everything he can to get away from conventional portraits. Interesting. (thru iconomy that, so it seems, is going to be updated "once a week or so" [read: every other blue moon])

Patrick Sundqvist's Ordinary Spaces

"This on-going project tries to examine our immediate surroundings and reflects upon the human condition at the beginning of the 21st Century, through looking at the spaces we create and inhabit." - Patrick Sundqvist

December 10, 2003

Rankin

Rankin's photography looks like the stuff in Dazed and Confused magazine? Well, maybe that's because Rankin founded that magazine.

Patrick Shanahan

"Esperantis by Patrick Shanahan is a seductive and unsettling insight into the nocturnal face of the modern urban environment. Taken in both Spain and Portugal between 1998 and 2001 as part of his doctoral thesis on 'theorising the post-landscape', these exquisite photographs explore imaginatively the notion of spatial estrangement - the material and psychological impact of the processes involved in the formation of the contemporary urban landscape." (thru Julian Thomas - thanks, Julian!)

January 5, 2004

Joe Duggan

In Joe Duggan's world everything looks so normal that it's unsettling. Since the original link appears to have some problems you can also look for Joe Duggan's work at the Koraalberg and Extraspazio galleries.

Robert Davies

Robert Davies' photography is quite diverse - and he even does paintings. More samples here.
